Stiff behind your knee? Try this...

2/21/2015

Picture
Do you sometimes have stiffness behind the knee, and you haven't figured out yet how to keep it from happening? It happens to me once in a while after having my knees flexed for a while (there's a clue right there!), and if left untended just gets worse as I walk and move.

BUT: until I and my body really figure out what the problem is, I've found that if I do this careful stretch I learned from biomechanist Katy Bowman (Restorative Exercise™), the tension and stiffness in the knee dissolve, and I can live on to figure it out another day.

Here are instructions from Katy's blog: "Lie down with your belly flat on the floor. Reach one leg out to the side without bending the knees!  Relax your head and neck on your hands. Try to bring your leg up until it is at 90°.  . . If you have a hip replacement, only stretch the leg that has not been replaced."

  • IMPORTANT: This doesn't make any difference in my knee stiffness unless I hold the position (RELAXING into it - not pushing!) for at least 1 minute.

Is there a face in your knee?

1/26/2015

Yesterday I ran across this photo in the San Francisco Chronicle, and I thought, "Oh, that's lovely!" . . .

amazing face
peering out of
Ms. Frances Chung's knee?"

Heal your shoulders by walking (First blog bit*)

10/13/2014

Here we go:
Do your shoulders good by swinging your arms back (not forward) as you walk, while keeping your shoulder blades wide and flat on your back, with your rib cage and pelvis in neutral position.
There.  Would you like to read more? Click here.

*This is my first "blog bit" experiment, and I will insert a link to the associated "blong" if you want to refer to the long version. (Yes, I am making these words up.) The blog bits will be quick and dirty. I'd love to hear what you think, whether about content or form.

TOO-TIGHT-TOE-EXTENSORS #1    10/23/2014

My tight toe extensors were so noticeable in that last photo I put up, it reminded me that I've been neglecting my foot stretching. And calf stretching. (You name it.)

But it's so easy to do Top of the Foot Stretch!    -- Here, I'll show you:

GIVE US SOME SLACK   9/12/2014
I'm in Greece!
Have I been doing all the industrious Restorative Exercise explorations and practices and every-single-day long walks I intended to do since I got here 2 weeks ago? Umm … well, a little bit, but not so much!  I am LAZY.
Or: Hey, shall I give myself some slack … (Read More at 9/12/2014)

Blong & blogbits inauguration

10/13/2014

My blogs are way too wordy.  How will anyone get any good out of my helpful missives if they're too long and dense to read? From now on I will post a short summary about each new message and post it under BLOGBITS.  The full text, if you want to get a detailed understanding, will be posted under the BLONG tab.  OK?

(I did try using Weebly's "Read More" function, but the font is so tiny no one would ever even notice it, so this is my solution.)

PS Just in case:
I hereby declare I invented these words, Blong and Blogbit on this 13th of October, 2014!
